Mulching is one of the easiest things you can do to give your garden and added boost. What is mulching excatly? Well its placing a barrier (the mulch) over your gardens soil and around the plants. This layer of mulch can be a variety of colours or types of wood, including bark or wood chips.
There are so many reasons to mulch….
Weed seeds need to be touching soil to germinate and take root. If you mulch there is a barrier between the soil and weed seeds as well as the weed seed and the sun. Therefore, the few that do germinate wont be able to take root into the soil and will be easy to pull out. Most wont germinate at all!
Bark or wood mulches retain water and keep the soil moist for longer. This helps to keep the garden more drought tolerant. We live in an area where water bans happen through the summer. Mulching helps minimize the amount of water our gardens need.
Prevents Soil Erosion
Mulch will help keep the rain water from washing away the soil especially in areas where there are slopes or slight grades.
Maintains Soil Nutrients
As an organic mulch decomposes it releases nutrients into the soil. This makes the soil healthlier and your plants healthier..
Different woods have different properties but mulching overall can help attract the good insects but also repel the bad.
Encourages Earthworms to Move In
Using organic material for mulching can encourage earthworms Any gardener will tell you, earthworms help improve soil structure and nutrient cycling.
Mulch is like the finishing touch for your garden beds. It can make everything look finished and clean.
