Polymeric Sand vs. Regular Sand: Why It Matters for Paver Joints

Once the pavers are down and the pattern looks right, it's easy to treat jointing sand as an afterthought. But the sand between the joints plays a bigger role in a paver installation's long-term performance than most clients realize, much like the base beneath it, a point we covered in why proper base preparation is the difference between a patio that lasts 5 years and 25. Choosing the wrong sand type can undo otherwise solid work.

What regular sand does (and doesn't do)
Traditional jointing sand fills the gaps between pavers, but it doesn't bind. Over time, it washes out with rain, gets displaced by foot traffic, and creates gaps where weeds take root and ants build nests. On a driveway or patio that sees regular use, this can mean joint maintenance every year or two, an ongoing cost that clients don't always anticipate when the project is first quoted.
Why polymeric sand performs differently
Polymeric sand is engineered with binding agents that activate when the sand is watered in after installation. Once cured, it locks the joints in place, resisting washout, weed growth, and ant infiltration far more effectively than regular sand. It also helps stabilize the pavers themselves, reducing shifting under freeze-thaw cycles, a real consideration in Ontario's climate.
Where it matters most
Polymeric sand is especially worth specifying on driveways, high-traffic walkways, and pool surrounds, where joint stability directly affects how long a surface stays level and weed-free. It's a small line item relative to the overall project cost, but it has an outsized impact on how the finished job holds up two, five, and ten years down the road.
A conversation worth having with clients
Many callbacks on paver installs trace back to joint failure, not the pavers themselves. Explaining the difference between polymeric and regular sand, and why the slightly higher material cost pays off in fewer service calls, is an easy way to demonstrate expertise and set the right expectations before the project starts. Clients tend to appreciate contractors who flag this kind of detail up front rather than letting them discover it the hard way.
Application matters too
Polymeric sand needs to be installed dry, swept thoroughly into joints, and activated with the right amount of water, too little and it won't bind properly, too much and it can haze the paver surface. Following the manufacturer's working time and weather guidelines makes a real difference in the final result.
We stock polymeric sand alongside our full paver and natural stone lineup, and our team can help you choose the right product for the traffic level and joint width you're working with.
